Appendices: Tooling
Reference-depth guides to the analysis suites — Cockpit, SystemTap, and Performance Co-Pilot — and the full C++, Go, and Rust toolboxes that keep this book's examples sharp.
Linux analysis suites: Cockpit, SystemTap, and PCP watch a whole fleet
linux-analysis-suites builds a single Fedora-based, multi-stage Containerfile (lsp45-pcp, 265 MB) shipping Performance Co-Pilot's pmcd with two live PMDAs -- openmetrics and podman -- run rootless with podman, alongside Cockpit's zero-scripting web console and SystemTap's kernel-module tracing on the systems-target VM: verified PASS 10/0 with a real pminfo value 42, live podman-socket container visibility, a working SystemTap kernel-module smoke test, and Cockpit's socket answering HTTP 200.
The C++ toolbox: CMake presets, Conan lockfiles, and GCC-vs-clang parity
cpp-toolbox is one C++23 binary and the full toolchain wrapped around it -- seven CMakePresets.json configurations sharing one _base, a committed Conan 2 lockfile for an isolated fmt sub-target, and a GCC-vs-clang parity gate on toolbox report -- read by clang-tidy, clang-format, and a custom gdb Python pretty-printer, with ccache and mold demonstrated but absent on the reference host. Verified on the Fedora 44 host: verify.lua PASS 20/FAIL 0, GCC and clang release builds byte-identical (digest=0x481984990deee5ff, diff empty), UBSan catching a seeded signed-integer overflow at toolbox.cpp:43, and gdb rendering Digest(0x481984990deee5ff) through toolbox-printers.py.
The Go toolbox: go.mod toolchain pins, go generate discipline, and the pprof-to-benchstat workflow
go-toolbox is one Go binary and the toolchain wrapped around it -- go.mod's go/toolchain directives resolved through GOTOOLCHAIN, a self-contained go generate pipeline producing a DO-NOT-EDIT tool table, and gofmt/go vet/pprof as go-native hard gates -- with committed configs for gofumpt, golangci-lint, staticcheck, delve, and benchstat shown as reference but absent on the reference host. Verified on the Fedora 44 host: verify.lua PASS 16/FAIL 0 offline, toolbox report digest=0x481984990deee5ff (byte-identical to ch46's C++ digest), go generate regenerating tools_generated.go byte-for-byte, go vet -tags vetdemo catching a printf mismatch at vetdemo.go:13, and go tool pprof -top naming hotLoop.
The Rust toolbox: rust-toolchain.toml pins, rustfmt and clippy as toolchain components, and the cargo-test-to-nextest workflow
rust-toolbox is one zero-dependency crate and the toolchain wrapped around it -- rust-toolchain.toml pinning channel and components so rustup resolves the same rustc, rustfmt, and clippy for everyone, an isolated misformatted fixture and a feature-gated clippy bait that make the format and lint gates assert real findings, and cargo test asserting the digest literal -- with committed deny.toml and clippy.toml for the cargo-nextest/cargo-deny/cargo-llvm-cov/cargo-audit tier shown as reference but absent on the host. Verified on the Fedora 44 host: verify.lua PASS 20/FAIL 0 fully offline, toolbox report digest=0x481984990deee5ff (byte-identical to ch46's C++ and ch47's Go digest), cargo fmt --check clean while rustfmt flags the fixture, cargo clippy -D warnings clean by default and naming needless_return under --features lintbait, and cargo test passing the digest unit test.
